Walking

Moyra Donaldson

Beneath my feet, layers

assert themselves, I hear

the rattle of old bones,

the quiet insistence

of fossils: stones speak

in hieroglyphics carved

by sea and sand and time

and human hand; circles

and whorls and oddness.

Soil is soaked in blood

and through the blood

grass grows, flowers bloom.

Dust of millennia rises -

settles to its new shape

when I have passed.
