The afterwards we don’t yet know

by Daragh Byrne

There is an afterwards we don't yet know -

for all the ways in which the world explodes

flinging shards of time, condensing now

into this shock - another final crossroads

each way closed off, no path left clear ahead -

(it always did this, dark days are too well known

history is made of mangled vehicles) -

there comes a moment, piercing, almost banal

a trickle of sunlight come in through the trees

outside your window, in the exact same way

it came in at you yesterday, or a soft smile,

a nod of recognition from that woman

on your morning walk - itself a freeing act -

opening a gap wide enough to poke at

the future, which reminds you that it wants

to be known, that it is ready to blast

your heart to smithereens anew in a

different, superior way. Prepare yourself.
