After visiting the collector’s house, I think of him browsing
Maureen Curran
What catches a heart and stops a man in his stride,
so he stoops, puts on his specs
lifts a piece of pottery, glass-ware, a tile, a postcard?
How he holds an artefact in his hand
lets it warm a little against his palm
maybe closes his eyes in almost prayer at the finding of it.
Becomes tearful at the human ability of making,
the life of it, the hope of fashioning a piece.
How that work is the ultimate belief in the future.
Belief that the felt moment can be captured
trust that it will be shared, trust that if one cares, another will care
and then we might all care again and caring might be enough.
