Swifts have their own problems - louse fly or“ked”-
which, scaled up to their size, is like a lobster sucking at the blood -
so hard won - one elusive midge by one.
The Apodidae from Apus meaning “no feet”
diverged from other birds as the last great
Tyrannosaurus wearily succumbed
and laid to rest its giant bones in layers of rubble.
Those ancient days, they shared the skies with pterasaurs,
high flying reptiles under a Cretaceous sun.
Anita Greg came to Belfast to run a crystal shop and stayed on after the shop had closed. She is a sculptor and the author of two poetry pamphlets, Sunken Cities and Birdlife of Connswater and is working on another about life between the tides. She is interested in the strangeness of birds and of sea creatures .
