Hirvi

by Gerry Stewart

A moose skittering

down a Helsinki street,

hooves like roller-skates.

Caught up in the inexplicable

urge to roam,

trapped

by that reckless choice.

It isn’t all sun-riddled

rye fields,

snow

beneath the aurora.

No one takes the time

to point out the pitfalls.

They only express displeasure

at our bumblings.

The entrance to quiet shade

cuts sharp

when you don’t understand

it’s a bank window.
