Rising from our bed, in another room
I open the blind to see how this day
Is beginning—the sky putty grey,
Within an hour of dawn. To the east,
The slimming moon rests in its bright cradle.
Between us, bats scatter with their obtuse
Wings, aerial and scalene. Fitful
In their flight between our house and orange tree
They almost meet midair, but don’t.
I hope they have had their fill of mosquitoes.
I hope our course
Is nothing like theirs.
