Ghost Stories of the River Lee

by Yiannis Doukas

A matter thick and still.

We draw them

On the wall

And keep them safe;

Their shadow is a sycamore

For us to sleep beneath.

The singer’s fingers

On the table,

Keeping the beat,

The ancient drum.

Once in a while, the fog

Does burn away.

The man who lives

Behind the wall

Puts on his wooden clogs

And goes out walking.

We spill our drink for him.
