Will There Be Birds?

After W.S. Merwin

When the words left you

You only had eyes for birds

The courtyard beyond your window

Would fill each day with crows

Darkened shadows

Out of the corner of your mind

Or the robin come to garden

With your greying days

A stranger solitary as a magpie

Comes with tea

In the green of evening

What colour will remain
