‘Twenty-five years ago, I painted a picture of the American flag. It was flying against a light blue background – so happy times, you know. Now, I’ve just recently finished a painting of an American flag that is in complete tatters, falling apart, like it’s exploded and burnt, with a black background’ - Ed Ruscha
Awake in the middle of the chalk plain hills
Looking down on Salisbury, England
Machine guns shake a hoverfly nest to death
In the space above our heads
An inquisitive fly
Knocks and scratches
Beating out a warning:
Listen! Stay awake! Be vigilant!
For England’s liturgy
Of choral plain song
Is being silenced once again-
The sun is setting, and evening prayers cease
Helicopters
Swarm overhead-
Even the famous white horse
Is running scared
One stray shell might break through
Its radio-controlled horizon
Wreak havoc on a springline settlement
The ancient sanctuary burns
In the ruins of the smoking monastery
We unearth a calf-skin coracle
A seaworthy craft
Prepped by monks in case of floods
We await a westerly
The favourable one
The Ponente-
In due course, we will sail
