he grips the dresser drawer, cocked 
like a hammer
over the snarl of my cowering shape
knees tucked, fingers splayed
elbows crossed and raised

​he snatches
growls
at a swath of purple flannel
ruptures the fastening

​my shirt gapes
my mother gapes
the drawer 
could swallow this folded frame
i drop my arms
do it,
i say

Courtney Lavender is a native Los Angeleno with deep roots in Ireland. She’s worked both on stage as a performing musician and behind the scenes in music licensing, band travel, and as a staff writer for the music magazine Rock Cellar. She has had additional written works published in Picaroon Poetry, Live Encounters Magazine, The Rumpus, and is working toward her first poetry collection.
